Have you ever read a favorite book and had the main character, or your favorite character, do something so heinous that you just have to put the book aside for a bit, if not for good? I have read every book in the Jack Logan series by J.D. Kirk and have grown to love the gruff, salty DI. Watching his relationship with the delightful, quirky medical examiner Shona has been such a great redemption arc for him. The ultimate test of his redemption was taking on the teenage daughter of his arch nemesis after putting him in prison for years. They were making it work. Olivis is Jack’s match…she’s as gruff and salty as he is, and as shifty as her father. In the latest book, all that work they did together has been destroyed. I see his side, as the detective whose default stance is suspicion. He needs answers when there’s a mystery to solve, but he screwed the pooch on this one. He only needed to believe her, and he didn’t. He may have even destroyed what he has with Shona. Now, I don’t know if I want to keep listening to the story. There’s no way he can bridge the chasm he’s blown in their relationship; no explanation will heal the hurt he’s caused her. OKAY, I know they are fictional characters and why am I going on about them like this is real life. True readers will understand my angst about this situation in a fictional story. SIGH…putting Jack back in the box for a while is all I can do.
